Yesterday was all about the young.
13 year olds Seth Styles and Fergus Weir showing composure above their years and demonstrating strong solid technique at the crease and in the field.
The younger of the Loomes’ smashing 42 very quickly – 15 before drinks and then 20 in 4 balls AFTER drinks – just what was in Jimmy Loomes’ drink hasn’t been investigated yet but let’s order 11 rounds of it for the next game.
Former Young Player of the Year Max Potter bowling a rapid spell and picking up a wicket
Younger Brother to Carla, Scott Roberts skippering the side well, and picking up his customary wickets
And Chris Knight played for the first time in a while.
We won the toss and elected to bat, much to everyone’s delight, Jolly Vareeth (14) and Farhan Javed (17) went out and made a steady start and looked composed as long as running between the wickets wasn’t involved – some classic village cricket moments involved – Yes, No, Maybe, Wait – we are all glad that Woop’s and Sorry weren’t required.
42-1 became 42-3 in the space of 3 deliveries as Jolly departed and James Sheath came and went – to be fair to the player who hasn’t batted in the league for 4 years, he only gets runs when the skipper manages to get himself hospitalised and Scott was refusing to do that for the team this week – I mean, talk about being selfish.
I’m not sure if we’ve had a batting pair with a bigger gap in height before, but Seth Styles and Jimmy Loomes steadied the ship before and after drinks and when Jimmy departed, and the briefest of brief cameos from Hishan Mansoor, it was Seth and Fergus Weir who managed the proceedings well. Wickets, however, fell fairly regularly and we were all out in the 31st over for 124.
GNG, in their response, batted hard and reached 125 in the 19th over – 2 wickets for Scott, one for Max and Chris. Catches for both James’ – Sheath off Max’s bowling and Loomes off Scott, and one for Seth behind the timbers.
With just one game to go the 2s are looking for a mid-table finish and consolidation in 5th
