Mowing it down

The fear of the end of the season drove Sunday availability through the roof. So much so there were two games. One team squeaked home at Leicester Road by 3 runs, wicket, runs, quality cricket...yawn whilst the Fleckney equivalent of the Carabao Cup squad went over to Mowsley to seek their own fun.

The team was a mix of the seasoned, the up and comers and the less than regulars visiting a ground where Fleckney successes are about as regular as sightings of Haley Comet.

Russ Blake, AKA the Ginger Geordie, opened the bowling in his annual game and charged in with rare effort and threw himself around the outfield with similar effort determined to get his borrowed whites as dirty as possible. Adam Houghton at the other end was perhaps more controlled but showing further signs of eminent promise.

To be fair it wasn't just Adam. Tom Seymour Smith was handy behind the stumps and Oliver Hennell, making his Sunday debut no less, bowled the best spell of the game. Mind you , you could tell it was Oliver's debut. He was far too polite and respectful to his team mates and captain especially, give him a few matches into next season and he will be lowered to the standards shown by the rest of us.

Tanzeel got himself a couple of wickets, dropped a couple of catches and bellowed possibly the worst appeal of the century when the batter underedged a pull shot onto his pad but he was having himself an afternoon out. Then the rain came., and boy did it rain.

The original monsoon abated and after an hour off both sides tried again even though there was a 12th Man called Underfoot Squelch now fielding for L&M.

An over into the reply and with 4 runs on the board the rain came again and it was plainly over. We think Brij is in good nick with the bat but clearly a higher power couldn't face it.

Thanks to the home side for their sterling efforts to get the game on but when you need a rowing boat to reach the square its time to head home. Mind you, this Carabao Cup squad weren't too disheartened. They were unbowed and unbeaten and at least they weren't playing Grimsby.
