And what a wonderful day it was to play some Softball Cricket.
The Roving Reporter was there and it was nice to see the Fleckney Ladies looking splendid in their new grey kit. Super Smart. Super Cool. Legends every one of them.
The 7 that travelled up to Loughborough were new skipper Lucy Bateman, Ruth Dye, Kinaari Shah, Jan Nix, Katharine Wright, Jodie Coleman, and Kari Cordiner. They were joined by a couple of Loughborough Town players who helped us make up the numbers.
The first game was against Grace Dieu, and put into bat, Fleckney made contributions throughout the innings before Ruth came in and did some biffing for 26.
The reply was close, in the main, before Grace Dieu's last pair showed some very intelligent Cricket to ease them past our total. Ruth took all 4 of the wickets to fall with a personal-best 4-21 of her 4 overs.
After being in the field for 16 sweltering overs, Fleckney was asked to do it again against Loughborough and went into it with great enthusiasm. Another decent effort with the ball, a first Fleckney wicket for Kari and Loughborough closed on 298. In response, some personal highest scores were recorded by Kinaari (17) and Katharine (11), and Ruth did some more biffing (39) but we came up short again.
To field for 32 overs straight through is tough, but the group stuck to the task and never gave up. At least 3 of them were carrying injuries but they still did everything they could. We are proud of this group at Fleckney.
A special note on Kinaari - a fantastic 8 overs across the two games, and she also played the shot of the day - a fantastic cover drive for 4.
