A return to normal?

Fleckney’s socially distanced season got off to a great start with a 15 run victory over Massey Ferguson.

FVCC batted first and got off to a solid start with Samit and Andy Holmes putting on 26 for the first wicket, before the former was bowled for 15.

That brought Michael Dunkley to the wicket and him and Andy added 85 against a bowling attack of diminishing quality.

Holmes retired on 50 and Dunkley followed him soon after for an unbeaten 51, before The Tractor Boys left arm spinner, King, took three quick wickets, ending with 3 for 16 .

Fleckney’s most reluctant batsman, Jimmy Loomes, got the innings back on track with a quick fire 34, including a couple of gorgeous drives, and the home side closed on 196 for 6 after 40 overs.

In response the visitors were reduced to 89 for 8 thanks to a decent effort from skipper Daz’s bowling arsenal (H.O’Reilly 2/13, Webber 2/26, Frank 2/37).

It looked like game over at that point, but a 9th wicket stand that was only broken by one batsman’s retirement (Iqbal who made 53*) threatened to take the away team to victory.

In the penultimate over, Andy Holmes made the strategic decision to drop the last man - a spill that avoided the return of Iqbal to the crease.

As a result the last pair failed to score the runs needed to win the game at the death, meaning it was Fleckney that ended victorious.

This was a great advert for village cricket, played in a decent spirit and with the vast majority of players getting a chance to bat or bowl (or both!).

Most importantly, everyone washed their hands and stayed safe!
