A beautiful late Spring day, warm temperatures and blue skies can elevate any scene but the already sensational views from the stately venue of Old Eastonians became something truly magnificent. The less said about the game the better though, nothing to see here!
How bad was it? In the grounds of Rockingham Fleckney were truly castled, it was joust not funny and led to a Knight that was not one to be remembered. Defeat by 235 runs is hardly one that will be thought of fondly.
A negotiated 'toss' led to the home side batting first and they ran up a score of 290. Tom Seymour Smith threw himself around like Superman with a rocket up his backside behind the stumps, Henry Rosier again impressed and Ollie Timms bowled an absolute beauty to jag one off the seam to take the top of off. Fleckney were outgunned but never downhearted.
Whilst victory was not likely the Fleckney line up were ready to resist but no-one could have envisaged the carnage that was to follow. Mandeep fell first ball, a full toss that was wide and ripe for despatch but then swung in alarmingly to smash his leg stump. A mix up left Yak run out and then Seth Styles was bowled first ball by another sensational inswinger. In short order Fleckney were 9 for 5 and minds began to drift to the 41 all out against Ibstock last season but thinking even that would be a recovery.
The irony is that the home side have their club records up in the pavillion and the lowest league score posted against them was from some bunch of jokers called Fleckney. The princely amount of 34 runs was now the target to beat.
Did Scooters team make it? Yes, they did. The aforementioned Tom nicked, edged and bludgeoned his way to 25 not out which was a fine effort of resistance (as was Manraj's vigil at the other end) and Fleckney crawled to 55 all out. Frankly awful but not their worst performance against this team. Small stuff and all that.
Good to mention was the impeccable spirit the young Fleckney players brought to the table. If you don't enjoy it what's the point? These young men are a credit to themselves and the club regardless of the result.
It's late and this Roving Reporter is out of castle puns. Well moat...ly!
Time for bed!
